There's No Universal Answer — But There Are Smart Guidelines
The most common question we get from first-time clients: "How often should I get my car detailed?" The correct answer depends on factors specific to your vehicle and situation. But after 6 years and 1,500+ details in Los Angeles, I can give you a clear framework that applies to most LA drivers.
Start With Your Parking Situation
Where your car sleeps determines your baseline detail frequency more than anything else.
Covered/garaged parking: Your car is protected from UV, salt, and organic debris while parked. Less contamination accumulation means you can space out details further. Minimum: every 6–8 weeks for protection maintenance.
Open outdoor parking (surface lots, street): Your car absorbs maximum UV, collects morning dew and organic debris, and has no protection from bird droppings and tree sap. More frequent care is needed. Minimum: every 4–6 weeks.
Coastal outdoor parking (within 1–2 miles of ocean): Salt air deposits continuously. Every 4 weeks is genuinely the right interval to stay ahead of salt bonding. Coastal clients on our monthly maintenance plan see the best results.
Factor in Your Protection Level
How long ago was your last professional detail, and what protection was applied?
No recent professional detail: Your paint is unprotected. Any interval is better than nothing, but get a Silver or Gold done first to establish a protection baseline.
Silver Detail (3-month wax): The wax layer needs refreshing before 3 months to maintain continuous protection. Monthly Silver maintenance is ideal; at minimum, every 8 weeks.
Gold Detail (6-month sealant): The sealant is designed to last 4–6 months. You can do monthly Basic or Silver maintenance in between and refresh with Gold every 5–6 months.
Factor in Your Driving Conditions
Freeway commuter: Heavy brake dust, road tar, and exhaust film accumulate faster than the average LA driver. Monthly professional washing + quarterly Gold detail is the right approach.
Weekend driver/low mileage: Less contamination accumulation. Monthly washing and Silver every 6–8 weeks is typically sufficient.
Construction or industrial zones: If you park near or drive through construction regularly, contamination accumulates much faster (concrete dust, iron particles, chemical overspray). Increase detail frequency accordingly.
The Four-Scenario Guide for LA Drivers
Scenario 1: Casual owner, garaged, moderate driving
- Recommended: Basic or Silver every 6–8 weeks
- Gold twice per year to decontaminate and reseal
Scenario 2: Daily driver, outdoor parking, inland
- Recommended: Silver monthly
- Gold every 5 months
Scenario 3: Daily driver, outdoor parking, coastal
- Recommended: Silver monthly minimum
- Gold every 4 months
Scenario 4: Premium vehicle, high standards
- Recommended: Silver monthly
- Gold every 3–4 months
- Consider ceramic coating for maximum protection longevity
The Cost of Waiting Too Long
Every interval between details, contamination accumulates. Past a certain point:
- •Brake dust begins corroding and creates micro-rust spots
- •Tree sap hardens and requires chemical treatment (or clay bar) to remove
- •Bird droppings etch clear coat — takes 24–72 hours in LA sun
- •Leather without conditioning begins drying and cracking
The work required to restore a neglected vehicle is always more expensive than the maintenance that would have prevented it.
Simple Rule of Thumb
Never let your car go more than 6 weeks without a professional hand wash. If you're on any kind of protection package (Silver or Gold), don't let it lapse past the product's stated protection window.
