The Inspection Is Coming
When your lease ends, the car gets inspected for wear beyond what the leasing company considers normal. Stains, odors, heavy scratches, and dirty interiors are the kind of things that can turn into charges on your final bill.
A detail can't fix dents or a cracked windshield. But a lot of what makes a car look "excessively worn" is actually dirt, stains, and grime — and that part is fixable.
When to Detail Before Turn-In
Many leasing companies offer a pre-inspection a few months before your lease ends. Check your paperwork. If yours does:
- 1.Detail the car before the pre-inspection so the report reflects the car at its best
- 2.Review the report to see what's flagged as excess wear
- 3.Fix what you can — cleaning and minor items — before the final turn-in
If there's no pre-inspection, aim to detail within the week before you return the car.
Exterior Checklist
- •Full hand wash and decontamination — clean paint makes light scratches far less noticeable
- •Remove water spots, sap, and bird-dropping marks before they get flagged as paint damage
- •Clean the wheels and remove brake dust — dirty wheels draw attention to curb rash
- •Dress the tires and clean the glass
- •Check light scratches — some surface scuffs polish out; deeper ones that catch a fingernail usually won't
Interior Checklist
- •Shampoo carpets and floor mats — stains are among the most commonly flagged items
- •Clean and condition seats, especially light leather with dye transfer
- •Remove odors from pets, food, or smoke — odors can be treated as excess wear
- •Wipe down every surface, including door panels, console, cup holders, and vents
- •Clean the cargo area and remove all personal items
- •Clean the headliner carefully if it has marks
Don't Forget the Paperwork Items
- •Both keys and key fobs
- •Owner's manual
- •Floor mats, cargo covers, and any accessories the car came with
- •Charging cables for EVs
Missing items are often charged separately.
What a Detail Won't Fix
Be realistic. Detailing won't fix dents, deep scratches through the paint, cracked glass, worn tires, or torn upholstery. For those, compare the cost of a repair against the lease-end charge — sometimes paying the charge is cheaper.
The Right Package for a Lease Return
A Gold Detail is the most thorough option: clay bar treatment, sealant, carpet and seat shampoo, and a steam-cleaned interior. It's the package we recommend for lease returns because it targets exactly what inspections notice. If the car is already in good shape, a Silver Detail may be enough.
We'll come to your home or office before your inspection. Book a detail or call (310) 692-4495.
