LA Has Seasons — Just Not the Ones You Learned in School
Los Angeles doesn't have a real winter, but it absolutely has detailing seasons — periods where your paint and interior face very different threats. Building your maintenance schedule around what's actually happening outside, rather than a generic monthly reminder, gets meaningfully better results.
Spring (March–May): Pollen and Rain Reset
LA's brief rainy season and pollen bloom overlap in spring. Rain here isn't the paint-washing benefit people from wetter climates assume — LA rain is infrequent enough that it mixes with accumulated dust and pollutants on your car's surface, creating a mildly acidic film that dries into water spots if not washed off promptly.
What to prioritize: A wash within 24–48 hours after any rain event, and a pollen-focused wash if you're near trees or open green space — pollen residue is surprisingly good at etching into unprotected paint if it sits and cooks in the sun for weeks.
Good move: If you skipped a Silver or Gold detail over winter, spring is a natural time to reset with a full wax or sealant application before summer sun exposure ramps up.
Summer (June–September): UV Is the Main Threat
This is the season that does the most cumulative damage to LA vehicles. Intense, sustained UV exposure oxidizes unprotected clear coat, fades interior plastics and leather, and bakes any surface contamination (bird droppings, tree sap, bug residue) into the paint faster than in cooler months — sometimes within hours instead of days.
What to prioritize: This is when paint protection (wax, sealant, or ceramic coating) earns its cost. A protected surface reflects UV and resists the etching that unprotected paint suffers. It's also the season to be fastest about removing bird droppings and sap — don't let them sit through an afternoon of LA sun.
Interior note: Dashboard and leather UV protection matters most now. If you're not already using a leather conditioner with UV protectant, summer is when cracking and fading accelerates fastest.
Fall (October–November): Fire Season Ash and Dust
LA's fire season overlaps with fall, and ash fallout is a real detailing concern that doesn't get talked about enough. Ash is abrasive and slightly acidic — wiping it off with a dry cloth (the instinct most people have) creates fine scratches across the whole panel. Ash needs to be rinsed off, not wiped.
What to prioritize: If there's any active fire activity in the region, avoid touching your car's exterior with a dry cloth entirely. Rinse first, always. This is also typically LA's driest stretch, so dust accumulation from Santa Ana wind events adds up between washes.
Winter (December–February): The Quiet Season, But Not a Skip Season
LA winters are mild, but this is often when people's detailing schedules slip because there's no obvious visual urgency — no snow, no salted roads, nothing dramatic. That's exactly why maintenance often lapses here, and contamination quietly builds up over a couple of skipped months.
What to prioritize: Don't let winter become a skipped quarter. This is a good stretch for interior-focused attention — deep vacuuming, leather conditioning — since exterior threats are lower intensity, giving you a natural window to catch up on the parts of the car that get less attention during busier months.
