The Install Is Only Half the Job
A ceramic coating isn't "install and forget." It's "install and stop doing the things that damage paint." The good news is that caring for a coated car is easier than caring for an uncoated one — washes are faster, dirt releases more easily, and water beads right off. You just have to follow a few rules.
Here's the routine I give every client after a coating install in Los Angeles.
The First 7 Days: Let It Cure
A coating feels dry within hours, but it keeps hardening for about a week. During that window:
- •Don't wash the car for about seven days — no soap, no water, no waterless wash
- •Avoid rain and sprinklers where you can, and park away from irrigation
- •Don't park under trees — sap and bird droppings on a curing coating are the worst combination
- •If something lands on it, gently dab it off with a clean, damp microfiber — no rubbing, no chemicals
After the cure window, normal gentle washing is fine and actually helps the coating perform.
The Wash Routine That Protects a Coating
Plan on a gentle hand wash about every two to three weeks, more often if the car is parked outside near the coast.
- 1.Rinse first, thoroughly, to float off loose dirt before anything touches the paint
- 2.Use a pH-neutral shampoo. Harsh or high-alkaline soaps slowly wear a coating down
- 3.Use the two-bucket method: one bucket of soapy water, one of clean rinse water for your mitt
- 4.Wash top to bottom with a clean microfiber or wool mitt, saving the dirtiest lower panels for last
- 5.Rinse again, then dry with a clean, soft drying towel or filtered air — don't let water air-dry in the sun
Wash in the shade, early or late in the day. LA sun heats panels fast, and soap or water drying on hot paint is how spots start.
What to Avoid With a Coated Car
- •Automatic brush car washes. Those brushes put swirl marks into paint — coated or not. One trip undoes a lot of what the coating is protecting
- •Dirty towels. A towel dropped on the ground is a towel full of grit. Retire it to wheels-only duty
- •Dish soap and household cleaners. They strip protection and dry out trim
- •Dry wiping. Wiping dust off a dry car drags particles across the paint. If it's dusty, rinse it
- •Wax on top. Waxing over a coating just covers its slick, hydrophobic surface with a softer layer
Handling LA's Specific Hazards
Sun: A coating resists UV, but a car that sits in full sun daily still works its coating harder. Shade or a carport extends coating life noticeably.
Hard water: Southern California's water is mineral-heavy. Sprinklers and air-drying leave spots that can etch even a coating if they sit for weeks. Dry the car after every wash and keep it out of the sprinkler zone. More in our guide to hard water spots in Los Angeles.
Bird droppings and sap: They're acidic and sticky, and baking in the sun speeds up the damage. A coating buys you time — not immunity. Soften with water or quick detailer and lift them off the same day.
Coastal salt air: If you live near Marina Del Rey, Venice Beach, or Santa Monica, salt film builds up faster. Rinse more often, even between full washes.
Keeping the Coating Performing
Over time, any coating's water beading gets a little lazier as a film of road grime builds up on top. That doesn't mean the coating is gone — usually it just needs a proper decontamination wash to bring the slickness back.
- •Every few months: a professional maintenance wash with decontamination restores the surface
- •Coating-safe maintenance sprays can top up hydrophobic performance between washes — use products designed for coated paint
- •Once a year: have the coating inspected so you know how much life is left
A professional maintenance plan takes all of this off your plate — the car gets washed correctly on schedule, with products that won't harm the coating.
Signs Your Coating Needs Attention
- •Water sheets slowly or sits in flat puddles instead of beading
- •The paint feels rough instead of glassy after a wash
- •Dirt sticks and needs scrubbing instead of rinsing away
Most of the time a deep decontamination wash fixes all three. If not, it may be time to talk about a refresh.
A Simple Monthly Checklist
- •Hand wash every two to three weeks with a pH-neutral shampoo
- •Rinse off bird droppings, sap, and bugs the same day
- •Dry the car completely after every wash or rain
- •Keep the car out of sprinkler range
- •Check how water behaves on the paint — tight beading means the coating is working
- •Book a professional decontamination wash every few months
What to Keep in Your Garage
- •Two wash buckets, ideally with grit guards
- •A pH-neutral, coating-safe car shampoo
- •A soft microfiber or wool wash mitt
- •Plush microfiber drying towels — and separate towels for wheels
- •A coating-safe quick detailer for spot cleaning
- •A dedicated wheel cleaner and soft wheel brushes
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take a coated car through a car wash?
Avoid automatic brush washes completely. A touchless wash is safer in a pinch, but some use harsh chemicals that wear a coating faster. A hand wash is always best.
Do I need to wax a ceramic-coated car?
No. Wax sits on top of the coating and hides its slick, water-beading surface. Use coating-safe maintenance products instead.
Why isn't my coating beading water anymore?
Usually a thin layer of road film is sitting on top of it. A proper decontamination wash typically brings the beading back. If it doesn't, have the coating inspected.
Can I wash it myself, or does it need a professional?
You can absolutely wash it yourself with the routine above. Professional maintenance washes every few months add decontamination that's hard to do properly at home.
What happens if a bird dropping sits on it for a few days?
The coating gives you more time than bare paint, but acidic droppings can still mark it, especially in heat. Clean it off as soon as you can, and have us inspect any mark that remains.
