Inside a Professional Interior Deep Clean — Step by Step

A professional interior deep clean goes far beyond vacuuming. Here's exactly what happens during a Gold-tier interior service at DG Detailing.

Your Car's Interior Is Dirtier Than You Think

Studies consistently show that the average car interior harbors more bacteria per square inch than a typical kitchen counter. This isn't a scare statistic — it's a logical result of how cars get used. Food and drinks get consumed, outdoor debris tracks in on shoes, pets shed and drool, children spill, and the interior gets closed up in the California heat, creating conditions where bacteria and mold thrive.

A surface wipe with a household cleaner doesn't address this. Neither does a basic vacuum. Here's what an actual professional interior deep clean looks like.

Pre-Inspection

Before we start, we do a walk-through of the interior to identify areas that need special attention: deep stains, pet hair accumulation, liquid damage, specific odor sources, or delicate materials (Alcantara, suede, carbon fiber trim) that require specific products.

This inspection informs which products and tools we use. A premium German car with Alcantara door inserts gets different treatment than a Toyota Camry with standard cloth. We never apply a single product to an unknown material without identifying it first.

Step 1: Dry Debris Removal

Before any liquid product touches the interior, we remove everything loose:

  • All floor mats are removed and set aside
  • All visible debris (trash, organic matter, obvious contamination) is removed
  • Pet hair is addressed with a dedicated rubber brush or pet hair removal tool — pet hair is notoriously resistant to standard vacuuming and requires mechanical agitation first

Only after loose debris is addressed do we begin vacuuming.

Step 2: Thorough Vacuuming

We use a professional-grade vacuum (not a household unit) with multiple attachments:

  • Crevice tool: Works into seat gaps, between center console and seats, between cushion sections, and along door sill edges — everywhere that standard vacuuming never reaches
  • Upholstery brush: Used on seat surfaces and headliner, where direct suction would be too aggressive
  • Standard nozzle: Floor carpets, trunk carpet, floor mats

Every surface accessible by vacuum gets done. This typically takes 20–30 minutes for a standard sedan, longer for SUVs with three rows.

Step 3: Hard Surface Cleaning

Dashboard, center console, door panels, and all trim surfaces are cleaned with appropriate products for each material:

  • Plastic and vinyl: Cleaned with an appropriate interior cleaner, then treated with plastic protectant (included in Silver and Gold packages) that prevents UV fading
  • Leather: Cleaned with a pH-appropriate leather cleaner before conditioning
  • Screens and glass: Cleaned with a product that doesn't streak and leaves no film (standard glass cleaner can leave residue that hazes screens)
  • Wood and aluminum trim: Cleaned with care to avoid scratching or stripping any coatings

We clean around buttons, in cup holders, in map pockets, and in door jambs — areas that accumulate surprising amounts of grime.

Step 4: Carpet Shampoo and Extraction (Gold Only)

This is the most impactful interior step we perform, and it's exclusive to Gold packages. Surface vacuuming removes loose debris. Extraction removes what's embedded.

The process:

1. Pre-spray a shampoo formula designed for automotive carpet — it penetrates fiber bundles and begins dissolving embedded dirt and staining agents
2. Agitate with a stiff-bristle brush to work the product into the fibers and break contamination loose
3. Apply the hot water extractor: this machine simultaneously injects hot water at controlled pressure and vacuums, pulling contamination and moisture out of the carpet together

The water that comes out is visibly dark — that's what's been living in your carpets. After extraction, carpets are damp but not saturated. They dry within 2–3 hours in normal LA conditions.

Floor mats receive the same treatment and are cleaned separately, then reinstalled after the main carpet is done.

Step 5: Seat Extraction (Gold Only)

Cloth seats receive the same hot water extraction process as carpets. This addresses:

  • Embedded sweat and body oils
  • Food and drink stains (including ones you've stopped seeing because they've been there so long)
  • Pet hair and dander that vacuuming didn't reach
  • Any biological contamination from passengers

Every seat surface — cushion, backrest, headrest — is treated. Seam lines receive special attention; they're where the most concentrated contamination tends to settle.

Step 6: Steam Cleaning of Hard Surfaces (Gold Only)

Professional-grade steam at 200–250°F is applied to every hard interior surface. Steam is the ideal tool for sanitizing automotive interiors because:

  • The temperature kills bacteria, viruses, and mold spores on contact
  • It doesn't require chemical sanitizers that could damage trim materials
  • It penetrates into air vents, button gaps, and textured surfaces where cloth wiping can't reach
  • It lifts embedded grime from textured plastic and vinyl without scratching

We apply steam to: dashboard, instrument cluster area, center console, cup holders, door panels, window switches and controls, seat bolsters, and the headliner where accessible.

Step 7: Leather Conditioning (Silver and Gold)

After all cleaning is complete, leather surfaces receive a professional conditioner application. The conditioner we use:

  • Penetrates leather fibers to restore moisture and flexibility
  • Creates a protective barrier against UV exposure
  • Leaves a matte, non-greasy finish — not the shiny, sticky feel of consumer leather treatments
  • Absorbs cleanly and requires no buffing

What You'll Notice Immediately

After a full interior deep clean:

1. The smell. Professionally cleaned carpets, extracted seats, and steam-sanitized surfaces smell genuinely clean — not masked with fragrance, just clean.
2. The visual difference in carpet and seats. Even carpets that looked "fine" look noticeably cleaner after extraction.
3. The tactile difference on hard surfaces. Steam-cleaned plastic has a different quality to the touch — grime-free texture rather than the subtle film that builds up over time.
