5-Year vs. 7-Year Ceramic Coating in Los Angeles: Which Should You Choose?

Both of our ceramic coatings start with the same correction-first prep. Here's what actually separates the 5-year and 7-year options, what each costs by vehicle, and who each one is right for.

The Question After "Should I Coat My Car?"

Once someone decides ceramic coating makes sense for their car, the next question is almost always the same: "5-year or 7-year?" It's a fair question, because the price difference is real and the marketing for coatings in general is full of big numbers.

Here's exactly how our two options differ, what they cost, and how I'd decide if it were my car.

What's the Same in Both

The prep is identical, and the prep is where most of a coating's quality comes from. Every coating we install starts with:

  • •Decontamination wash: a pH-neutral hand wash, then iron and tar removal to dissolve contamination you can't see
  • •Clay bar: pulls bonded contaminants out of the clear coat so the surface is truly smooth
  • •Machine polish: a single-stage polish to remove light swirls, oxidation, and haze — so we coat corrected paint, not damaged paint
  • •Panel prep: polishing oils are wiped off so the coating bonds to bare clear coat
  • •Hand application: the coating goes on panel by panel and is leveled by hand

A cheap coating applied over unprepared paint fails early no matter what it says on the bottle. Ours don't skip these steps at either level.

What's Different

The 5-year coating is our standard option and the one most drivers choose. Application takes about 4 hours.

The 7-year coating is a longer-life coating system with more application time — about 6 hours — built to hold its protection and gloss longer against LA sun, road film, and outdoor parking.

In practice, the difference shows up in the later years. Both look excellent coming off the install. The 7-year coating is the one that's still beading water and resisting contamination well after the point where a 5-year coating starts to fade.

Pricing by Vehicle

Vehicle5-Year Coating7-Year Coating
Coupe$750$895
Sedan$875$1,120
Midsized SUV$1,075$1,420
Truck / Large SUV$1,265$1,710

Larger vehicles cost more because there's more paint to decontaminate, polish, and coat — the price follows surface area, not a flat rate.

A Word on "Years" in Los Angeles

Coating ratings assume the car is cared for properly. Real-world life depends on three things more than the number on the label:

  • •Where it's parked: a garaged car keeps its coating far longer than one that sits in full sun on the street every day
  • •How it's washed: gentle hand washes extend a coating; automatic brush washes shorten it
  • •How fast contamination comes off: bird droppings and sap left to bake in the sun degrade any coating faster

That's not a reason to skip the 7-year. It's a reason to understand that a well-maintained 5-year coating can outlast a neglected 7-year one.

Choose the 5-Year Coating If…

  • •You plan to keep the car about three to five years
  • •The car is garaged or covered most of the time
  • •You want strong protection at the lower price point
  • •This is your first coating and you want to experience what it does

Choose the 7-Year Coating If…

  • •You're keeping the car long-term — five years or more
  • •The car parks outside full-time, especially near the coast in Marina Del Rey, Venice Beach, or Santa Monica
  • •It's a new car and you want the longest-lasting protection from day one
  • •It's a dark color, where gloss and swirl resistance matter most visually

What Install Day Looks Like

Ceramic coating is done at your home or workplace, like all of our services. A typical install runs like this:

  1. 1.Inspection. We look at your paint in good light and point out anything the polish can't fully correct
  2. 2.Decontamination wash, iron removal, and clay bar
  3. 3.Machine polish to correct light swirls and haze
  4. 4.Panel wipe to remove polishing oils
  5. 5.Coating application, panel by panel, leveled by hand
  6. 6.Initial cure and walk-around, plus your aftercare instructions

Plan on about 4 hours of coating time for the 5-year option and about 6 hours for the 7-year option, on top of prep. A covered or shaded spot works best, because the coating needs a clean, dry surface to cure. Our guide to preparing for a mobile detail covers the rest.

My Honest Take

If you're on the fence and the car lives outside in LA, the 7-year is usually worth the difference — the extra protection is spread across years, and outdoor parking is exactly where coatings work hardest. If the car is garaged and you change vehicles every few years, the 5-year is the smarter buy.

Either way, the coating only performs if it's maintained. We'll walk you through a simple aftercare routine at the end of every install.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is paint correction included in the price?
Yes. Both options include the decontamination wash, clay bar, and a single-stage machine polish. Heavily damaged paint may need more correction, and we'll tell you before we start if that's the case.

Can I go with the 5-year now and upgrade later?
You can recoat in the future, but a coating is applied to prepared paint in one session. If you know you're keeping the car long-term, it's more efficient to choose the 7-year from the start.

How soon can I drive the car?
Right away. Keep it dry and out of sprinklers where possible, and don't wash it for about seven days while the coating fully cures.

Does the coating go on wheels and glass too?
Our coating service focuses on the paint. Ask us when you book if you want extra attention on wheels or glass.

Which is better for a black car?
Dark paint shows swirls and fading the most, so the longer-lasting 7-year coating is often worth it on black, dark blue, and dark gray cars — especially if they park outside.
