What's Actually Included in a Basic Car Detail (And Why It Matters)

A basic car detail is more than a car wash — here's exactly what's included, what a professional does differently, and why it matters for your paint.

What Is a Basic Car Detail?

Most people have heard the term "basic detail," but very few know what actually happens during one — or why it's fundamentally different from a regular car wash. Let me walk you through exactly what our Basic Detail includes, what each step does, and why the sequence matters.

At DG Detailing, our Basic Detail covers four core services: an exterior hand wash, interior vacuuming and surface wipe-down, a high-gloss detail spray application, and tire dressing. Those four steps sound simple. The difference is in how they're done.

The Exterior Hand Wash

The most important word in "hand wash" is hand. Every panel of your vehicle is cleaned by hand using a professional wash mitt, not a brush, not a sponge, not an automated machine. We use the two-bucket method: one bucket of clean, pH-balanced shampoo solution, and a separate rinse bucket. After every panel, the mitt goes into the rinse bucket to release contamination before going back into the wash solution.

This process sounds meticulous because it is. The whole point is to prevent cross-contamination — the process by which grit and debris picked up from one panel gets dragged across another, creating micro-scratches and swirl marks. This is exactly what automated car washes do on every single cycle.

The shampoo we use is pH-neutral, which means it lifts dirt without stripping any existing wax or sealant layer from your paint. Detergents used in automated washes are often high-alkaline, optimized for speed rather than paint safety.

Interior Vacuuming and Surface Wipe-Down

After the exterior is washed and dried, we move inside. Every surface gets attention:

  • Seats and floor carpets: Thoroughly vacuumed to remove dirt, crumbs, debris, and pet hair from all seat crevices and floor mats
  • Dashboard and center console: Wiped down with a product appropriate to the material — different cleaners for plastic, leather, wood trim, and screens
  • Door panels: Cleaned and wiped, including door pockets and armrests
  • Cup holders and storage compartments: Detailed out — these accumulate surprising amounts of grime

This isn't a quick once-over. We work through the interior systematically so nothing gets missed.

High-Gloss Detail Spray

After the hand wash and dry, we apply a high-gloss detail spray to the exterior panels. This step does two things: it adds a thin layer of protection that repels light dust and water between details, and it enhances the gloss of the paint immediately.

Think of detail spray as a light, fast-absorbing layer of protection between professional wax applications. It's not a substitute for a full sealant — that's what Silver and Gold packages provide — but it extends the life of existing protection and keeps your car looking cleaner between visits.

Tire Shine

The finishing touch: tires are cleaned and dressed with a professional tire shine product. Clean, dressed tires do more for a car's overall appearance than most people realize. Dull, browning tires (caused by UV exposure and tire bloom) make an otherwise clean car look neglected. Properly dressed tires have a rich, even finish that completes the detail.

Why This Matters More Than a Car Wash

Here's the difference in plain terms. A drive-through car wash:
- Uses brushes or high-pressure jets that can scratch paint
- Uses harsh, alkaline detergents that strip protection
- Skips interior entirely (unless you pay extra)
- Provides zero protection after the rinse

A DG Detailing Basic Detail:
- Washes entirely by hand with paint-safe products
- Vacuums and cleans the interior properly
- Leaves a protective detail spray layer on paint
- Dresses tires for a complete, finished look

Who the Basic Detail Is For

The Basic Detail is ideal for regular maintenance. If you're already on a Silver or Gold schedule, a Basic Detail in between keeps your car looking sharp without the time and cost of a full protection package.

It's also an excellent starting point for clients who've never had a professional detail — a clean baseline from which to assess your car's actual condition and decide on the right next step.

How Often Should You Book a Basic Detail?

Every 4–6 weeks for most LA drivers. Los Angeles's combination of UV, coastal salt air, and freeway grime means contamination builds up faster here than in most cities. Monthly maintenance prevents that buildup from bonding into the paint.
